It's been a very busy couple of weeks in the pro shop, I feel like the summer is flying by.
The Eaton Talbot
The Eaton Talbot, our 36 scratch event which I host, was a fantastic success. The field was 57 players this year, up by 10 and a worthy winner was Heswall's in form Tom Dolan.
Tom followed a solid 71 with a fine 68 in which he "just holed a few good putts". Tom's 5 under total won him the £500 first prize comfortably in the end from our very own Sham Jagota. Sham's first round 74 left him too much to do to catch Tom, but a fantastic start 4 under through 8 holes led to a fine 70 and level par 144 proved good enough for 2nd place.
Cameron Tye finished tied third at 1 over following his opening 71 with a battling 74. 4 over through 10 holes, Cam was 3 under for the next 7 before dropping a shot at the last.
The following weekend saw me hosting my 16th Professional's day. A very enjoyable day saw Simon Dangar winning with a stunning 71-4-67 for a 3 shot victory. Simon took 6 on the 6th hole but showed his experience and moved on to reduce his handicap back down to 3. Runner up was David Moffatt with a very steady 75-5-70 and Matt Robinson won the best gross with a 70.
Matt showed his resilience taking a triple bogey 8 on the 5th before fighting back just like Simon. The Lady Captain won the ladies competition, but a very low turnout suggests we need some ideas on format for this competition. Any ideas welcome?
The junior initiatives are pushing forward and we now have 3 level 1 volunteer coaches, Chrissie Latter, Sue Parkes and Chris Barker. Last Saturday we were at Christleton fete introducing golf to all present. The response was wonderful, with one excited youngster telling us ours was the best activity at the whole fete. Thanks to our volunteers, and let's hope the Waverton fete this Saturday is as positive.
Ian Beech and I have been in to Waverton primary school and met the Head teacher who is a keen 12 handicapper. We will be having 30 youngsters down to the club on 5th and 15th July to deliver taster sessions. This is all part of the push to get young people to try golf. The Board are fully behind this project and have provided funding to train extra volunteer coaches, so if you'd like to help just let me know.
We've also been delivering taster sessions to ladies who want to Get into Golf. This initiative is sponsored by Cheshire and England Golf, and we have had a great response with 17 ladies turning up for our 2 sessions of coaching followed by tea and cake.
These tasters are being followed up with 5 week courses of group lessons. Again, thanks to Lady Captain, Sue Seys Llewellyn and the other volunteers for their support.
Nick Foxon, my longstanding assistant and 7 others are doing a 72 hole charity golf day this Friday raising money for Muscular Dystrophy. Other members are Bradley Claxton, James Williams and Jack Wiseman and they are hoping to raise a decent sum, £2500 being the target.
Sponsorship forms are in the pro shop, or click here to donate online.
Good luck to them all.
