Massey wins the Eaton Talbot
Last Sunday saw the 6th playing of my baby, The Eaton Talbot. For those of you who don't know, after 3 years of waiting I managed to get us into the Northern Order of Merit schedule which I always felt was a way of guaranteeing success for this event. 36 hole scratch events are never easy to get off the ground, but over the last few years the Talbot is going from strength to strength.
51 golfers from all over the North West tee'd it up with the lowest handicapper being defending champion Tom Dolan from Heswall off +3. A total of 24 players off 1 or better shows how well regarded our black tees course is.
40mph gusts developed during the day but, playing in handicap order the quality of the final 3 ball shone through. Sandiway's +2 England star Rhys Nevin Wharton shot a 71 in the 1st round to lead by a shot from Northenden's +2 Cameron Massey with Tom Dolan back in joint 3rd with a 74. Youngsters Jacob Oakley (0) and Archie Palmer (2) also had 74's.
72 proved to be the best of the afternoon with our own Cameron Tye (1) and Tom Dolan matching winner Cameron Massey's 2nd successive 72. This resulted in a win by 2 clear shots for the Cheshire star.
Dolan came 2nd, Nevin-Wharton 3rd and Cameron Tye 4th.
CSS was 75 in the morning and 74 in the afternoon and the event raised over £600 profit for the golf club. All in all a tremendous success.
On a personal note I'd like to thank past Captain Bob Costello for his help as honorary starter and closing down the competition. Also past Chairman and past Captain Peter Longson for his valuable counsel on the rules.
